From Data Analyst to Designer: My Creative Journey

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to go from data analyst to designer, this is my story. For years, my life revolved around programming, reports, and databases. It was structured, logical, and technical, but deep down, I always knew creativity was waiting for me.

Where My Creative Journey Began

First, let me share where it all started. My love of crafting began in high school when I took a home economics class. That single class sparked a lifelong passion for making things with my hands. Even though I eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and built a career in data analysis and operations, the pull of art never faded.

Putting Creativity on Hold

Then came a long season of responsibility. As a busy mom of three, working full-time, and pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration, I had little time to nurture my creative side. Although I felt fulfilled by family and work, I still missed the spark of crafting and design.

The Turning Point

Eventually, life shifted. As my kids grew up and moved out, I found myself with space and time I hadn’t known in decades. At that moment, I gave myself permission to return to art. I tried new mediums, explored digital design tools, and began reconnecting with the creativity I had set aside for years.

A Season of Loss and Clarity

Around this time, I faced the heartbreaking loss of my mother. Her passing gave me clarity: life is too short to delay what truly matters. I realized I wanted to create, to share my work, and to inspire women, especially those like me who had put their own passions aside to embrace creativity again.

Taking the Leap Back into Design

That’s when I took a leap. I joined the Design Suite program, which gave me a strong foundation and the confidence to grow as a designer. Fueled by momentum, I made the bold decision to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Digital Design. At first, it felt daunting to return to school at this stage of my life, but it has become one of my most rewarding decisions. Today, I am proud to run One Crafty Gal Designs, where I combine my technical skills with my love of creativity. Through digital downloads, surface pattern collections, and commissioned artwork, I get to share my designs with others. More importantly, I encourage women to reconnect with their own creativity and discover what’s possible when they step back into art. And the best thing of all, I am still working that full-time job and I am enjoying my family.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, my journey from data analyst to designer has shown me that it’s never too late to start again. Creativity is always there, waiting for us to embrace it. All we need is the courage to give ourselves permission.
